$200. That’s what Fortinet charges for the NSE 4 exam in 2026.
Most of the web still says $400. That number is old, and it’s the single biggest source of confusion on this topic. Fortinet’s own training helpdesk lists NSE 4 through NSE 6 exams at $200 each, and that price holds through the pricing update Fortinet has scheduled for 2 November 2026.
There’s a second thing almost nobody explains properly: the difference between the NSE 4 certification and the FCP credential. Get that wrong and you’ll budget for the wrong number of exams. We’ll sort it out below.
This guide breaks down every cost on the path to Fortinet NSE 4 certification, from the exam fee to training, labs, retakes, renewal, and what you actually pay outside the US.
Last verified: 1 September 2026 against Fortinet’s published pricing.
What’s Changing on 2 November 2026
Worth knowing before you plan a certification path, because it doesn’t affect NSE 4 but it does affect what comes next.
| Exam | Price now | From 2 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| NSE 4 exams | $200 | $200, no change |
| NSE 5 exams | $200 | $200, no change |
| NSE 6 exams | $200 | $200, no change |
| NSE 7 exams | $200 | $400 |
| NSE 7 recertification assessments | $200 | $400 |
| Industry certification exams (new) | n/a | $400 |
| NSE 8 practical exam | $800 | $800, no change |
| NSE 8 recertification exam | $400 | $400, no change |
Prices are USD and don’t include tax.
So NSE 4 stays at $200. But if you were planning to push through to FCSS, the NSE 7 half of that doubles in November. Booking before 2 November saves you $200 on that exam.

How Much Does the NSE4 Exam Cost?
The Fortinet NSE 4 FortiOS 7.6 Administrator exam costs $200 USD per attempt. Fortinet sets that price globally and the exam is delivered through Pearson VUE.
Here’s what the $200 buys you:
- One attempt at a proctored exam, 80 to 90 minutes
- 50 to 55 questions, multiple choice and multiple select
- Immediate pass or fail result
- Your choice of a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctoring via OnVUE
That’s the sitting fee and nothing else. No study materials, no training, no lab access. Just the test.
Fail it and you pay the full $200 again. Fortinet requires a 15-day wait between attempts and there’s no retake discount.
Why You Keep Seeing $400
Search “NSE4 exam cost” and you’ll hit a five-year-old Reddit thread quoting $400, plus a pile of blogs that copied it. Some of those still rank on page one.
The $400 figure traces back to older Fortinet exam pricing from before the current structure. It isn’t what Fortinet publishes today. If a training provider quotes you $400 for a single NSE 4 exam, check the date on their page.
One real $400 number does exist though: two exams at $200 each, which is what the full FCP credential costs. That’s probably where some of the confusion comes from.
NSE4 vs FCP: What’s the Difference?
This trips people up. Here’s the short version.
NSE4 is the exam level. FCP is the certification you earn. You can’t get an “NSE4 certification” on its own anymore. Instead, NSE4 is one half of the Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP) credential.
To earn FCP in 2026, you need:
- Pass one NSE4 exam ($200) – like the FortiOS 7.6 Administrator
- Pass one NSE5 exam ($200) – like FortiManager or FortiAnalyzer
Both exams must be in the same FCP track. The available tracks are:
- Secure Networking (most popular)
- Security Operations
- Cloud Security
- SASE
Total exam cost for a full FCP certification: $400 USD (2 x $200).
Total Cost of Fortinet NSE4 Certification

The exam fee is the easy part. Here’s what people actually spend, depending on how they study.
Budget Path: Self-Study ($240 to $480)
| Expense | Cost |
|---|---|
| NSE 4 exam fee | $200 |
| Fortinet self-paced training | Free |
| Fortinet documentation | Free |
| Practice exams (third-party) | $40 to $80 |
| Total, NSE 4 only | $240 to $280 |
| Add NSE 5 elective for FCP | $200 |
| Total, full FCP | $440 to $480 |
One retake adds $200 to whichever line you’re on.
Fortinet gives away their self-paced training, which is unusual. That includes the full FortiGate Administrator course, roughly 12 hours of content. The on-demand labs aren’t included and run $100 to $250 extra.
This path works if you’ve already got hands-on FortiGate time. Say six months of configuring firewalls at work. Without that, self-study alone is a gamble.
Balanced Path: Free Training Plus Labs ($380 to $730)
| Expense | Cost |
|---|---|
| NSE 4 exam fee | $200 |
| Fortinet self-paced training | Free |
| On-demand labs | $100 to $250 |
| Practice exams | $40 to $80 |
| Supplementary video course | $40 to $200 |
| Total, NSE 4 only | $380 to $730 |
| Add NSE 5 elective for FCP | $200 |
| Total, full FCP | $580 to $930 |
This is where most people land. Free Fortinet training as the base, lab time to practise configurations, a video course to fill gaps.
Premium Path: Instructor-Led Training ($2,200 to $4,700)
| Expense | Cost |
|---|---|
| NSE 4 exam fee | $200 |
| Instructor-led training course | $2,000 to $4,500 |
| Practice exams (often included) | $0 to $80 |
| Labs (usually included) | $0 |
| Total, NSE 4 only | $2,200 to $4,780 |
Want structure, real-time feedback, and guided labs? This is the route. At SMEnode Academy our live Fortinet NSE 4 training covers the full exam syllabus over 16+ weeks, includes lab access, and comes with free mentorship. You’re not paying extra for the practical parts that decide exam day.
If you want structure, real-time feedback, and hands-on labs guided by an instructor, this is the route. At SMEnode Academy, our live Fortinet NSE4 training covers the full exam syllabus over 16+ weeks, includes lab access, and comes with free mentorship. That means you’re not paying extra for the practical components that actually make the difference on exam day.
Sound expensive? Do the maths on the alternative. A retake is $200 plus another month of your evenings. Structured training upfront often lands cheaper than the budget path once you count failed attempts.
What You’ll Pay Outside the US
Short answer: the same $200, plus your local tax.
Fortinet sets one global USD price. There’s no regional discount, no India price, no student rate. Pearson VUE bills you in your local currency at their conversion rate on the day, and adds local tax or VAT where it applies.
That surprises people. Plenty of certifications are cheaper in some markets, and Fortinet’s isn’t one of them.
What this means in practice:
- The $200 you see quoted is before tax. Your checkout total will be higher.
- Your exact local price shows at the Pearson VUE scheduling page once you pick your country. That figure is what you pay.
- Exchange rate moves between booking and sitting don’t matter. You’re charged at booking.
- Buying a voucher in a cheaper currency doesn’t work. Vouchers are priced in USD too.
Budget the equivalent of $200 plus 5% to 20% depending on your country’s tax rules, and you won’t be caught out.
What’s on the NSE4 Exam?

Knowing what you’re walking into helps you plan your study time and budget. Here’s the exam breakdown.

| FortiOS version | 7.6.0 |
| Questions | 50-55 |
| Duration | 90 minutes |

One thing to keep in mind: there’s no partial credit. Each question must be answered 100% correctly to get the point. And there’s no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank.
Exam Domains
The NSE4 FortiOS 7.6 Administrator exam covers five main areas:
- Deployment and System Configuration – Initial setup, logging, high availability, cloud deployments, FortiGate CNF, and FortiSASE
- Firewall Policies and Authentication – Policy configuration, NAT, Fortinet Single Sign-On (FSSO)
- Content Inspection – SSL inspection, web filtering, application control, antivirus, IPS
- Routing – Static routes, SD-WAN implementation
- VPN – IPsec VPN setup and troubleshooting
The exam tests practical knowledge. You need to understand how to configure and troubleshoot FortiGate firewalls, not just memorise theory. That’s why hands-on lab experience matters so much.
Best NSE4 Study Resources (Free and Paid)

Not all study materials are worth your money. Here’s what actually helps, ranked by value.
Free Resources (Start Here)
1. Fortinet Training Institute – Self-Paced Courses
The single best free resource available. Register at training.fortinet.com and you get access to the full FortiGate Administrator course. About 12 hours of structured training content that maps directly to exam objectives.
2. Fortinet Product Documentation
The official FortiOS 7.6 administration guides are free on Fortinet’s docs site. Dense reading, but incredibly thorough. Good for when you need the exact details on a specific feature.
3. Fortinet NSE 1, 2, and 3 Courses
These introductory courses are completely free and build your foundation. NSE 1 and 2 earn you the FCF (Fortinet Certified Fundamentals) badge. NSE 3 covers the FortiGate Operator basics. Solid starting points if you’re new to the Fortinet ecosystem.
Paid Resources (Worth the Investment)
4. On-Demand Labs ($100-$250)
Fortinet’s official lab environments give you hands-on practice with real FortiGate configurations. This is where theory turns into skill. If your budget allows for one paid resource, make it this one.
Want to build your own lab instead and pay nothing?ُSMEnode Labs site walks through it: how to add a FortiGate VM to EVE-NG, with an NSE 4 lab topology. Slower to set up, free to run, and you keep it after the exam.
5. Practice Exams ($40-$80)
Third-party practice tests help you get comfortable with the question format and identify weak spots before the real exam. Look for providers with current FortiOS 7.6 content since the exam updated in late 2025.
6. Instructor-Led Training ($2,000-$4,500)
If you want the fastest path to passing, structured live training combines lectures, labs, and real-time Q&A with experienced instructors. Our Fortinet NSE4 course at SMEnode Academy is designed for working professionals who need flexible scheduling without sacrificing depth.
Study Plan Recommendation
Most successful candidates spend 4 to 8 weeks preparing for the NSE4 exam. Here’s a realistic timeline:
| Week | Focus | Resources |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Complete Fortinet self-paced course | Free training portal |
| 3-4 | Hands-on lab practice | On-demand labs or course labs |
| 5-6 | Deep review of weak areas | Documentation + notes |
| 7-8 | Practice exams and final review | Practice tests + labs |
If you’ve got at least 6 months of hands-on FortiGate experience, you might shorten this to 3-4 weeks. Starting from scratch with Fortinet? Plan for 8-12 weeks minimum.
How Does the NSE4 Cost Compare to Other Security Certifications?

If you’re weighing Fortinet NSE4 against other vendor-specific security certifications, cost is a legitimate factor. Here’s how they stack up.
| Certification | Vendor | Exam Fee | Questions | Duration | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortinet NSE4 | Fortinet | $200 | 50-55 | 90 min | 2 years |
| Cisco CCNA (200-301) | Cisco | $330 | 100-120 | 120 min | 3 years |
| Palo Alto PCNSA | Palo Alto Networks | $155 | 60-75 | 80 min | 2 years |
| Check Point CCSA | Check Point | $250 | 90 | 90 min | 2 years |
A few things jump out.
PCNSA is the cheapest at $155. NSE 4 at $200 sits in the middle. CCNA costs more at $300 but it’s a broader networking cert, not really a head-to-head comparison. Our CCNA exam cost guide has the full breakdown if you’re weighing that path.
For firewall vendor certifications specifically, $200 is competitive. And Fortinet says FortiGate holds over 50% of global firewall unit market share with six million units deployed, which is their own figure but tells you something about how often the skill shows up in job postings.

NSE4 Certification Renewal and Ongoing Costs
Your NSE 4 certification runs two years from the exam date. After that you recertify.
Fortinet added a cheaper option here in 2026, and a lot of people don’t know it exists.
Recertification Assessments (new since 15 July 2026)
Since 15 July 2026, Fortinet offers recertification assessments priced at $200 for NSE 4 through NSE 7 and Industry certifications. From 2 November 2026 the NSE 7 recertification assessment goes to $400, while NSE 4 to 6 stay at $200.
One rule catches people out: exam vouchers and recertification assessment vouchers aren’t interchangeable. A voucher you bought for a Pearson VUE exam can’t be used on a recertification assessment, and the reverse is also true. Buy the right one.
Your Renewal Options
| Method | Cost | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Recertification assessment | $200 | The newer, simpler route |
| Retake the current NSE 4 exam | $200 | Latest version of the exam |
| Pass a different same-level exam | $200 | A different NSE 4 exam in another track |
| Earn a higher certification | Varies | Passing NSE 7 recertifies the levels below it |
That last one is handy. Working toward FCSS or FCX? You don’t renew separately. The higher cert carries the lower levels.
Over six years, recertifying twice at $200 runs you $400. Call it $67 a year to stay current.
How to Save Money on the NSE4 Exam
A few practical ways to keep your costs down.
Use Every Free Resource First
Fortinet is unusually generous with free training. Their entire self-paced course library is free. Most vendors charge hundreds or thousands for equivalent content. Take full advantage of this before spending a dollar on paid resources.
Ask Your Employer
According to industry data, around 42% of IT professionals receive some form of employer support for certifications. If your company uses Fortinet products (and plenty do since Fortinet holds the #1 global firewall market share), there’s a strong business case for them to fund your certification.
Even if there’s no formal programme, ask. The worst they can say is no.
Book NSE 7 before 2 November 2026
Only relevant if FCSS is on your roadmap. But it’s a clean $200 saving for booking early.
Pass on the First Attempt
Sounds obvious, right? But the math is real. A $200 retake plus months of additional study time is the most expensive “savings” plan there is.
In our live classes at SMEnode Academy, we see a clear pattern. Students who complete the full lab hours and take at least two full-length practice exams before sitting for the real thing almost always pass on their first try. The ones who rush? They’re the ones booking retakes.
Consider Exam Voucher Timing
Fortinet occasionally offers promotions through authorized training partners. Keep an eye on Fortinet’s training portal for bundle deals that include exam vouchers with training purchases.
Bundle NSE4 and NSE5 Preparation
Since you need both exams for FCP, studying for both at the same time can save you time and money. Some training programmes, including ours, cover material relevant to both exam levels. That’s more efficient than treating them as completely separate efforts.
Is the Fortinet NSE4 Worth the Cost?
Here’s the honest answer. It depends on your career path.
If you work with Fortinet products or want to, yes. Absolutely worth it. Fortinet holds over 50% global firewall market share, and employers actively look for FCP-certified professionals. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 33% growth for information security analyst roles through 2033 , and vendor-specific certs like NSE4 are what separate your resume from the pile.
Network security professionals with Fortinet certifications typically earn between $75,000 and $130,000 USD depending on experience and location. If you’re based in Canada, our guide to cybersecurity jobs in Canada covers salary ranges, top employers, and which certifications Canadian hiring managers look for specifically. That makes the $400 total investment (NSE4 + NSE5 exam fees) look pretty modest.
If you’re trying to decide between Fortinet NSE4 and other security certification paths, our Fortinet NSE4 vs Cisco Security comparison breaks down the differences in detail.
The Complete Fortinet Certification Path
Understanding where NSE4 fits helps you plan ahead and budget accordingly.
| Level | Certification | Exams Needed | Total Exam Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSE 1-2 | FCF (Fundamentals) | Free online quizzes | $0 |
| NSE 3 | FCA (Associate) | Free course completion | $0 |
| NSE 4 + NSE 5 | FCP (Professional) | 2 exams | $400 |
| NSE 6 + NSE 7 | FCSS (Specialist) | 2 exams | $400 |
| NSE 8 | FCX (Expert) | Written + Practical | $2,000 |
Starting from zero, you can reach FCP for $400 in exam fees. That’s remarkably affordable compared to other vendor certification paths. The free NSE 1-3 levels give you a solid foundation before you spend anything on proctored exams. Planning a longer security career beyond NSE4? Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Fortinet NSE 4 exam cost in 2026?
The NSE 4 exam costs $200 USD per attempt, and that price holds after the 2 November 2026 pricing update. Prices exclude tax. The full FCP credential needs two exams, so budget $400 for that.
Is Fortinet NSE 4 certification free?
The training is free, the exam isn’t. Fortinet gives away self-paced courses through their training portal, including the full FortiGate Administrator course. The proctored exam at Pearson VUE costs $200 per attempt.
Is NSE 4 a certification on its own, or do I need NSE 5 too?
Both answers are right, depending on which credential you mean. Passing the NSE 4 FortiOS Administrator exam earns the NSE 4 certification, valid two years, for $200. The FCP credential is separate and needs a core exam plus an elective, which totals $400. Check which one your employer is asking for.
How hard is the NSE 4 exam?
Moderately hard. 50 to 55 questions in 80 to 90 minutes, testing real FortiGate configuration and troubleshooting. Candidates with six months of hands-on time plus 4 to 8 weeks of focused study usually do fine. There’s no partial credit, so lab practice beats memorisation.
Can I take the NSE 4 exam online?
Yes. Pearson VUE’s OnVUE platform lets you sit it from home or the office if you meet the system and environment requirements. Test centres are available worldwide too.
Does the NSE 4 exam cost less in India or other countries?
No. Fortinet sets a single global USD price of $200 with no regional discount. Pearson VUE bills in your local currency at their conversion rate and adds local tax where it applies, so your total will be slightly above the $200 equivalent.
How many questions are on the NSE 4 exam?
50 to 55 questions, with 80 to 90 minutes to finish. The older FortiOS 7.2 version had 60 questions and 105 minutes.
Is NSE 4 still valid?
Yes. NSE 4 is active and part of Fortinet’s current programme. Certifications earned earlier stay valid until they expire. New candidates take NSE4_FGT_AD-7.6, covering FortiOS 7.6.
How long is the NSE 4 certification valid?
Two years from the date you pass. Renew with a $200 recertification assessment, by retaking the current exam, by passing a different same-level exam, or by earning a higher certification such as FCSS or FCX.
What’s changing with Fortinet exam prices in November 2026?
From 2 November 2026, NSE 7 exams and NSE 7 recertification assessments go from $200 to $400, and new Industry certification exams launch at $400. NSE 4, 5 and 6 stay at $200. NSE 8 pricing doesn’t change.
Bottom Line
The Fortinet NSE 4 exam costs $200 USD per attempt in 2026, and it stays $200 after November’s pricing update. That earns you the NSE 4 certification, valid two years. Want the full FCP credential? Budget $400 for two exams.
Add study resources and the real total runs from about $240 self-study to $4,700 with premium instructor-led training.
Three things most guides won’t tell you. The $400 figure floating around the web is stale. Fortinet’s free self-paced training is genuinely good and costs nothing. And if FCSS is on your roadmap, sit NSE 7 before 2 November to save $200.
